ANHAA Year in Review

As we look to start 2018, we wanted to send out a recap of 2017, and give a preview of some of the things to come in 2018 for ANHAA.

We started 2017 with enhanced indoor workouts for our softball and baseball players at Highland Elementary school and the Ardsley Community Center.

In April, we had a great adult social event at the North Penn VFW in Glenside.  We had 3 main goals for this event. First, we wanted to bring the members of our club together, independent of the age or gender of your children, for an opportunity to enjoy an evening together. Board Member Jake Corropolese did a fantastic job organizing some fun games for all, and the DJ had plenty of people dancing.  Secondly, we wanted to raise funds to off-set the costs of the on-deck cages for safety. Board Members Andy Keyser and Katina Balis put a lot of effort into getting donations and putting together some amazing gift baskets for the raffle prizes, and we were able to raise the funds to pay for the cages.  Our third, and perhaps most important goal was to make a personal appeal to each of you to consider joining the Board. I am proud to say that we added 2 additional Board Members in 2017, and that attendance at board meetings by parents was higher than any time in recent memory.

We are also excited to announce that our second Adult social will be on May 5, 2018 Save the Date! You might want to start practicing if you want to beat Team Jake...

The township has a new commissioner of Parks and Recreation. We spent 2017 working with the Parks Commission, and our Township Commissioners, to improve the facilities we use. In addition to new safety on-deck cages at Penbryn, Penn Ave fields, Community Center and Ardsley Park, we are working on a number of ideas to improve the safety and condition of our fields.

The baseball and softball seasons were successful with 385 players in all ages from t-ball, baseball, and softball.  While it is always great to improve and win games, what is more important to the club is that we are able to field teams from t-ball through 18U. In fact, we fielded multiple teams at most of our levels, and our programs for boys and girls 13 and up is better than most clubs in our area, including many that cover a much larger area. We are particularly proud that, in addition to playing competitive sports, our young players also donated their time and energy to helping the club out with service hours, from our Family Fun Day, to cleanup, and helping run clinics and practices.

Through the coordination efforts of Judy Whisman and a team of volunteers, we had the Conway Field snack shack open on Fridays and Saturdays throughout the baseball season, and we plan to continue that this season.

Our Family Fun Day in June saw the return of the Phillie Phanatic! It was a great event for the kids. We hosted several playoff games, all-star games, and ran some open programs through the summer.

Dr. Nate Lent did a tremendous job of coordinating the installation of an AED at Conway Field, and helped with the training of many of our coaches and volunteers.

Our soccer program had 187 participants across 6U, 8U and 10u this year. We have a great batch of enthusiastic coaches who are committed to teaching the sport, and we are planning enhancements to the program in 2018.

As we enter 2018, we have expanded our indoor training programs. For the first time, we are offering skills clinics for baseball and softball players from 10U through 18U at OnDeck Sports in Hatboro, PA. Baseball Clinics are on Wednesday nights and Softball clinics are on Sunday nights. We are also looking to have a guest instructor for baseball at one of the sessions, and have some players from the Penn State Brandywine softball team work with the softball girls. In March, we will have indoor time in Highland and the Community Center to get the younger kids started.

Registration is now open, so please go online and register at www.anhaa.org. We are always in need of volunteers to help out, so don't hesitate to drop us a line and let us know you can help

Finally, we would like to thank you all for your commitment to the organization, and for helping to make ANHAA the best community athletic organization in the area. We hope to see you on the fields or at a board meeting....

ANHAA Social on 4/22

We would like to thank everyone who attended our social event (beef & beer) Saturday, 4/22.  We had a great turnout at the VFW. Thank you, also, to all who donated items for the raffle or helped in any way to make the night the success it became.

We would like to remind you that one of the goals of this event was to point out that we are a volunteer-run organization.  Please consider helping out in any way you can.  Whether it is stepping in to help coach on the field, volunteering to work in the snack shack for an hour, or attending our board meetings (first Wednesday of each month), we need your help to keep the doors open and keep the kids on the fields.

Good luck to all players, families and coaches this season.  The next ANHAA-wide event will be the Family Fun Day on Saturday, 6/10 - more information to follow by email and will remain available on our website at www.anhaa.org.

ANHAA: Important Note on Soccer Changes for Fall 2016

Ardsley North Hills Athletic Association (ANHAA): Soccer Changes for Fall 2016

US Youth Soccer is introducing several changes starting next season. The main aspects of these changes are age divisions, small-sided games, and field and goal sizes. As a club that works with other local intramural clubs (in the U10 program) as well as prepares its players for advancement to travel teams starting at U11, ANHAA plans to adhere to these new guidelines as much as possible. Most, if not all, other local clubs are also migrating to these guidelines in some way.  We may not be able to adapt to every new change immediately but will plan to phase in as we can.

The focus of this letter is not to explain the rationale behind the guidelines but rather the impact on our club.  For further information on the reason and details of the changes, see the EPYSA web site: http://www.epysa.org/membership/USSoccerDevelopment/

Age Guidelines

Previously age groups were determined Aug to July. For example, this past season, a U10 team could have anyone UNDER 10 on Aug 1 2015. This is being shifted to calendar year, so next season U10 will be UNDER 10 on Jan 1, 2016. Because ANHAA (and most local intramural clubs) group two age groups together, next season age groups will be based on the following:

Division

Birth Year

U10

2007 and 2008

U8

2009 and 2010

U6

2011 and after

Note it may appear that some children will jump two levels, but that is not the case.   There is just a shift in the definition of the age brackets by six months.

This will mean that some kids in the same grade will be playing at different levels.  This is similar to the softball age groupings.  Because we generally attempt to mix rosters year to year we don’t envision a major impact from this change (as opposed to older travel teams who have played together for several years).

However, with this change, some of our U10 players who played only one year of U10 will be moving on to U11. As we do every year, we will reach out to our U10 players in late winter to make them aware of AC United evaluation times and help answer any questions they may have in the transition.

Small Sided Games

The new guidelines continue to promote the concept of small-sided games which enable more touches and involvement with the players on the field. The following table summarizes ANHAA's current approach and the new guidelines.

Division

ANHAA 2015 Season

US Youth Soccer Guidelines

U10

8v8 (keeper)

7v7 (keeper)

U8

7v7 (keeper)

4v4 (no keeper)

U6

6v6 (no keeper)

4v4 (no keeper)

ANH will follow the guidelines as close to possible but will also make decisions based on number of children registered and number of available coaches.  We will also evaluate the U8 changes closer to the season to determine if we want to introduce a more gradual transition (such as going to 6v6 or 5v5 next season) as well as the use of a keeper at this age level (which we traditionally have done and will likely continue).

Additionally, the new guidelines recommend playing quarters for U6 and thirds for U8 to allow more breaks and discussion of the game during the match.  There are also recommended changes in field and goal sizes which ANHAA will evaluate and determine how to best phase in based on field space and existing equipment.

If you have any questions on these changes, please feel free to contact soccer@anhaa.org.

ANHAA Announces New Board Members

Ardsley North Hills Athletic Association (ANHAA) would like to announce the new officers of its board.

  • President - Tim Malfara
  • Vice President - Katina Balis
  • Secretary - Marcus Delgado
  • Treasurer - Mike Whisman

On behalf of the ANHAA community, we also would like to thank Jim McGrath for his 8 years of service as president of ANHAA.  No matter the circumstance, Jim's primary focus was always on the best interest of our children and our community.   Fortunately, Jim will remain on the board and will continue to oversee the baseball program.

Lastly we need YOUR help!   We are a volunteer-run community-based club that invites ALL families to participate. This coming year we will especially need help with registrations, communications, publicity, managing the web site, and just about anything else! Monthly meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at 8:30 pm at the Conway Field clubhouse.

If you have interest in becoming more involved with this great community focused organization, stop by a meeting or email info@anhaa.org.
