As we look to start 2018, we wanted to send out a recap of 2017, and give a preview of some of the things to come in 2018 for ANHAA.
We started 2017 with enhanced indoor workouts for our softball and baseball players at Highland Elementary school and the Ardsley Community Center.
In April, we had a great adult social event at the North Penn VFW in Glenside. We had 3 main goals for this event. First, we wanted to bring the members of our club together, independent of the age or gender of your children, for an opportunity to enjoy an evening together. Board Member Jake Corropolese did a fantastic job organizing some fun games for all, and the DJ had plenty of people dancing. Secondly, we wanted to raise funds to off-set the costs of the on-deck cages for safety. Board Members Andy Keyser and Katina Balis put a lot of effort into getting donations and putting together some amazing gift baskets for the raffle prizes, and we were able to raise the funds to pay for the cages. Our third, and perhaps most important goal was to make a personal appeal to each of you to consider joining the Board. I am proud to say that we added 2 additional Board Members in 2017, and that attendance at board meetings by parents was higher than any time in recent memory.
We are also excited to announce that our second Adult social will be on May 5, 2018. Save the Date! You might want to start practicing if you want to beat Team Jake...
The township has a new commissioner of Parks and Recreation. We spent 2017 working with the Parks Commission, and our Township Commissioners, to improve the facilities we use. In addition to new safety on-deck cages at Penbryn, Penn Ave fields, Community Center and Ardsley Park, we are working on a number of ideas to improve the safety and condition of our fields.
The baseball and softball seasons were successful with 385 players in all ages from t-ball, baseball, and softball. While it is always great to improve and win games, what is more important to the club is that we are able to field teams from t-ball through 18U. In fact, we fielded multiple teams at most of our levels, and our programs for boys and girls 13 and up is better than most clubs in our area, including many that cover a much larger area. We are particularly proud that, in addition to playing competitive sports, our young players also donated their time and energy to helping the club out with service hours, from our Family Fun Day, to cleanup, and helping run clinics and practices.
Through the coordination efforts of Judy Whisman and a team of volunteers, we had the Conway Field snack shack open on Fridays and Saturdays throughout the baseball season, and we plan to continue that this season.
Our Family Fun Day in June saw the return of the Phillie Phanatic! It was a great event for the kids. We hosted several playoff games, all-star games, and ran some open programs through the summer.
Dr. Nate Lent did a tremendous job of coordinating the installation of an AED at Conway Field, and helped with the training of many of our coaches and volunteers.
Our soccer program had 187 participants across 6U, 8U and 10u this year. We have a great batch of enthusiastic coaches who are committed to teaching the sport, and we are planning enhancements to the program in 2018.
As we enter 2018, we have expanded our indoor training programs. For the first time, we are offering skills clinics for baseball and softball players from 10U through 18U at OnDeck Sports in Hatboro, PA. Baseball Clinics are on Wednesday nights and Softball clinics are on Sunday nights. We are also looking to have a guest instructor for baseball at one of the sessions, and have some players from the Penn State Brandywine softball team work with the softball girls. In March, we will have indoor time in Highland and the Community Center to get the younger kids started.
Registration is now open, so please go online and register at www.anhaa.org. We are always in need of volunteers to help out, so don't hesitate to drop us a line and let us know you can help.
Finally, we would like to thank you all for your commitment to the organization, and for helping to make ANHAA the best community athletic organization in the area. We hope to see you on the fields or at a board meeting....
